What is the theme in The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis?

Family is a major theme here. Although Bryon and Kenny do not always get along, the Watsons are quite functional. The parents are responsible and wise about how they raise their children. There is a bond of caring despite the trials and tribulations of being a black family in the United States during the 1960's. They do not have much money but they represent something far more important: they represent closeness and loyalty to each other.
