When Conroy requests to teach at Yamacraw, Dr. Piedmont states he is a God-send. What does that tell you about the position?
It seems a teacher is really needed. This happens early in chapter 1. The Superintendant says he has been waiting for someone to teach "those colored children". Dr. Piedmont seems to have a lot of power and seems to be religious.
