The story of Santi Bess’ exodus symbolizes the necessity of stories and legends to inspire further positive action. When Hiram is young, he hears a folk legend about his grandmother, Santi Bess, who supposedly transported herself and 50 slaves back to Africa using Conduction. Hiram later learns that this story may even be true. Either way, it helps to inspire other slaves and Railroad operatives.
