The Welcome Book is a symbolic validation of King and Mother's claims about the outside world. The stories in the book were written by women who experienced terrible violence and emotional abuse at the hands of men who, supposedly, were infected by some sort of virus that led them to become violent (especially towards women). Passages from the Welcome Book separate the chapters in Part II, and when Mother wishes to punish Lia for staring at Llew shortly after the arrival of the men, she tells her to go to her room and read from it. Her intention is to remind Lia what men are capable of.
