How does Whelan entrap the Washington Square ensemble in the novel, The Washington Square Ensemble?

When Porco drops hints about the ensemble's operation to Whelan, he persuades his reluctant friend and police officer, Sal, to meet him in Washington Square Park for a chess game which is actually a cover for surveillance. Whelan's surveillance is successful, and the group is broken up.
