Why is the narrator angered by the curate's reaction to the catastrophe in the novel, The War of the Worlds?

The narrator finds that the holy man's fears unnerving, a position that angers him all the more because he feels that there is no point to being a religious man if religion cannot at least give the curate the courage to face their situation.
