Why is Sophie afraid of "sea fleas" in the novel, The Wanderer?

Sea Fleas are the tiny organisms that live the ocean and eat flesh off bones. Sophie is afraid that is she falls overboard, the sea fleas will pick her bones clean and no one would know what happened to her body.
