Who is Rosalie from The Wanderer and what is their importance?

Rosalie is Uncle Dock's first love. They met on the island, where Uncle Dock regularly took her out in search of whales because they were her favorite animal. Once they saw a whale, however, Rosalie left Uncle Dock and married another man, breaking Dock's heart.
