What is Rosalie's connection to Uncle Dock in the novel, The Wanderer?

Rosalie was Uncle Dock's first love. They first met on the island and Uncle Dock regularly took Rosalie out in search of whales because they were Rosalie's favorite animal. Once they saw a whale, however, Rosalie left Uncle Dock and married another man, breaking Dock's heart.
