What is the theme in The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides?

Manufactured reality is a major theme in the story. The suburb is a closed universe that guarantees that the members of its community will remain happy, safe and secure as long as they stay within its boundary. The big city is seen as a dangerous, noisy, poor and decaying place to live. The suburb is a bubble, an insulated area for the wealthier class where nothing threatening ever happens. Living in the suburb insures that everything is safe and predictable. Every house looks the same, everyone acts the same way and every need is fulfilled by well-organized services that deliver the necessary goods to the door.
