Why does Bindu stop talking to Debbie in the novel, The Vibrant Years?

Debbie accompanies Bindu to the open house at Shady Palms in the beginning of the novel. When they arrive at Shady Palms, Bindu finds that they all greet Debbie with much more kindness and excitement, presumably because she is white. She stops talking to Debbie after this event.
