Why did Bindu stay married to Rajendra in the novel, The Vibrant Years?

Rajendra, Bindu's husband, died some 20 or so years before the start of the novel's events. He is described as a very conservative and fairly repressive husband, but Bindu stayed with him for many reasons.... the main reason being that he did not leave her when he learned about her scandal with Oscar. In fact, he paid Oscar to not release the film, thereby saving her reputation.
