Why does Stella give her engagement ring to Early in the novel, The Vanishing Half?

Before Stella leaves Mallard, she gives the ring to Early to help him and Desiree pay for Adele's medical expenses. The ring acts as a representation of Stella's remorse, and illustrates her attempt to make amends with her family.
