What does running represent to Jude in the novel, The Vanishing Half?

Jude's running habit symbolizes freedom. Living in Mallard, Jude faces racial discrimination every day. She is marginalized at school and throughout the community for the darkness of her skin. Running is the only way she can find some semblance of liberation.
