How does Caroline and Elena's friendship change over the course of the novel, The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and the Struggle?

Caroline Forbes starts the story as part of Elena's close circle of friends and is in her year group at Robert E. Lee High School. It soon becomes apparent however, that Caroline is unhappy at having to play second fiddle to Elena Gilbert, and during the story starts to make moves to dethrone her friend from the top spot of their peer group. This jealousy is made worse during the story as Caroline sides with Tyler Smallwood after she and Elena fight for Stefan and Caroline fails.
