What seeming contradictions does Bakha notice in the treatment of cows?

Bakha notices that, despite their wealth, the caste Hindus do not feed their cattle well. This puzzles him, because they seem to venerate the cattle, even calling them "mother." But he recalls that when his father was gifted a buffalo, even though the family is desperately poor, they managed to care for the animal well.
