The woman shouts abuse at Bakha because he has "defiled" her house by sitting on the platform leading to the steps, but she is very sweet to the sadhu, from whom she wants a favor. She offers the sadhu a warm meal, but she tells Bakha he must sweep the street before she will feed him. When she finally gives him something to eat, it is a single piece of bread, which she throws into the street from the rooftop terrace of her home.
