Hutchinson believes that Bakha is interested in Christianity--perhaps enough to convert. But the reader learns that Bakha is mainly interested in the Colonel's clothing, particularly the fact that he wears trousers, which Bakha loves. Bakha is hoping that Hutchinson might offer him some of his cast-offs.
