Beauty is a symbol of power and advancement for women in the novel. Gulabo has secured herself a slightly higher social position through her beauty than she was born into. She does not need to suffer as much as the other villagers but she does struggle to hold onto her position as her beauty fades. Her perceived declining beauty spurs her jealousy of Sohini and other younger women.
