Bakha feels a kind of awe whenever he sees the huge, ornate temple--but he also feels a little of the fear of the gods and goddesses that was inculcated into him as a child, and he feels that the courtyard of the temple is filled with some kind of "unknown force" that makes it hard to breathe freely (46). The sight of some ordinary pigeons, with their subtle colors and quiet cooing, makes him feel calmer.
