Bakha wakes early. He is very cold, and he lies on his mat thinking about how miserable life in the outcastes' colony can be. He waits for his father to scold him to get up--not because he is avoiding work, but because he is angry at the way his father treats him. He remembers wistfully when his mother used to get up before him and have sweet, hot tea waiting for him. He finally gets out of bed when a man outside starts scolding him about the dirty latrines.
