Bakha's father is lazy and weak. Even though the narrator describes him as kind-hearted, deep down, Lakha bullies his children and verbally abuses them, thinking that this will keep them subservient to him despite his own lack of merit. He makes Bakha do most of his work and contributes little to the family, although he is very proud of the status that he has as the head of the sweepers.
