The man and the crowd that gathers to watch him abuse Bakha seem to be angry at outcastes in general, and feel that they are somehow getting above themselves--one man says that they are "getting more and more uppish" as he describes a servant's request for more money (39). They are angry that Bakha seems to have some kind of pride in himself, and they dislike the way he carries himself, as if he is worth something.
