Dr. Thaddeus, the superintendent, is the novel's antagonist. He holds a grudge against Mr. Kermit for the cheating scandal, and when he learns that Mr. Kermit is planning on retiring, he does everything he can to get Mr. Kermit fired, so he will not be able to collect his retirement from the district.
