What is the importance of Room 117 in the novel, The Unteachables?

The Unteachables are taught in Room 117. The room is located on the far side of the school, past the gym, right next to the custodian's office and the metal shop. The hallway leading up to it smells like old gym socks, and the room feels cut off from the rest of the school because of its placement.
