Greenwich Middle School is located in the suburbs of Connecticut. Almost all the action in the novel takes place in the school, and all the characters are connected to the school in one way or another. The school is located right next to a river, which is where the students take the vuvuzelas to dispose of them in honor of Mr. Kermit. The school is run by the superintendent, Dr. Thaddeus, who has a terrible teaching philosophy in regard to underachieving students. Instead of helping them, the administration bunches the students together and places them in an isolated classroom where they are out of the way until they are passed onto the high school. The school is stratified, with the jocks and cheerleaders being the most popular kids, and the Unteachables being at the very bottom of the food chain. The science fair is held in the auditorium of the middle school.
The Unteachables are taught in Room 117. The room is located on the far side of the school, past the gym, right next to the custodian's office and the metal shop. The hallway leading up to it smells like old gym socks, and the room feels cut off from the rest of the school because of its placement. When Mr. Kermit first arrives, he finds the students roasting marshmallows on pencils over a bonfire they have set in a trashcan. The room is full of desks and nothing hangs on the wall. After the students get suspended for ruining the vuvuzelas, Mr. Kermit decorates the room with posters and graphs, and reluctantly puts up a goodbunnies chart in which the students get to collect Puffy-Tails.
Jake Terranova is in middle school when he steals the answer key to the National Aptitude Tests and distributes them to his whole class. When he grows up, he starts a business, Terranova Motors, which becomes the largest car dealership in the state. Jake feels guilty about what happened to Mr. Kermit after the scandal erupted, so he invites his students to come take a field trip at the dealership. The students explore the showroom and enjoy looking at all the brand new cars. However, their favorite spot is the shop, where mechanics work on cars. The students return again and again to learn more about how cars are built, and they eventually redesign Mr. Kermit's car for the science fair in the shop.
