How does the author use metaphor in the novel, The Unsinkable Greta James?

When Conrad invites Greta to help him scatter the bag of ashes he has carried with him, both the moment and the ashes, become symbolic manifestations of the characters' attempts to heal from their grief and to move forward together. They are literally letting Helen go by releasing her ashes on the glacier, and thus metaphorically pursuing renewal after her death.
