WIMPS, weakly interacting massive particles, might contribute to missing matter. These exotic particles may be the reason for missing matter or, instead, it might stem from a shadow world filled with shadow humans. Another possibility Hawking considers is that branes may be curved in such a way that they would behave like a second brane and create strange planetary orbits.
