Stars that are red-shifted emit light that is toward the red end of the spectrum, and blue-shifted stars do the same with blue. Red-shifted stars are moving further away from us while blue-shifted stars are moving closer. Edward Hubble discovered these collections of stars and now we know the universe is expanding because of his work.
