The word luck is utilized by both Olive and other characters in a variety of ways. Due to this, the author presents many different ideas of what the concept of luck means and how different characters define luck within their own lives. This addition also acts as an important feature of the language as it draws back to the theme of luckiness and how it impacts the plot. Through her ability to step back and examine her life through an outside perspective, Olive challenges what it means to be lucky and just how much she is responsible for how various situations turned out. This growing self awareness is reflected in the language used as Olive starts using much more positive words to express her situation.
