The Corvette is a metaphor for speed and good design. This is the streetcar that Mark Donahue first races in. He races one of his friends who has a different sports car designed to travel on the public and private roadways. He emphasizes that this is different from a race car. In fact, his racing experience in the Corvette introduces him to the truth of how much of a difference car design really makes. He loves the Corvette that stars in the early chapters of the book.
