Israel is the central location of the book and the one given the most symbolic significance by its author. Both Danny and Amos were Israeli citizens, Amos being born there and Danny emigrating to Palestine after World War Two. Lewis places great emphasis on the way Amos and Danny’s commitment to defending Israel and serving in the Israeli army shaped their lives.
