The Umbrella Man
How does the author use simile in the story, The Umbrella Man?
.
.
Dahl uses simile to enhance the descriptive quality of the characters in this story. For example, when the girl and her mother are following the old man down the road after their conversation, the girl notices that he is “scuttling like a rabbit” (664). The fact that the narration is from the girl’s perspective, coupled with the fact that she chooses to describe the man as a rabbit, which is an animal generally adored by little girls, suggests that the girl is beginning to admire the old man. This is confirmed later in the story, when the girl describes the man as “superbly cool” (666).
