How does our opinion of the old man change over the course of the story, The Umbrella Man?

When the old man is first introduced, he is presented as helpless and needing money to get home garnering our pity. When we later learn that the old man is using the money to buy whiskey, we realize that he would rather satisfy his base pleasures, like the need for alcohol, than have long term security.
