Why is the grandfather left behind on the journey through Kruger Park in the story, The Ultimate Safari?

From the author's descriptions of the grandfather, he is clearly suffering from some form of dementia or the effects of a mental breakdown. During the course of the trek through Kruger Park, he wanders off through the high grasses, becomes lost, and as a result, the family is forced to leave him behind.
