Frank knows long before the opening of the novel that he is meant to ignite his firewood and, therefore, burn himself. But, unlike others who have suffered similar curses, Frank does not shy away from his destiny. Instead, he finds a way to make it work in his favor. And, by sacrificing himself to destroy Commodus and Caligula, Frank takes his future back, and earns a chance to live life free of that burden.
