Abe, Mort's brother and Helen's husband, is described as a jovial man who sees everything through an optimistic filter. He is pleased with his family when he has four sons, but he quickly comes around to excitement about a new baby in the family. He fears that he will not know how to connect with Natalie, but he discovers that he can have a strong connection just by being there for her.
