Just prior to the story's climax, the governess thinks, “I seemed for the moment to have mastered it, to see it all” (118). As expressed, she seems to have mastered it, she sees herself in complete charge of everything, at least until Mile's death, which she goes onto blame on the supernatural.

“I definitely saw it turn, as I might have seen the…wretch to which it had once belonged turn…with my eyes on the villainous back…” (pg. 54).

"Might have seen" alludes to the fact that she is unsure of what she has seen.
