Who is Applegate Skinner from The Trumpet of the Swan and what is their importance?

Applegate Skinner is the camper, who doesn't like birds and says so to Louis. The other boys tease Applegate and bully him relentlessly. When Applegate takes one of the canoes out it capsizes, Louis saves him. Applegate eventually admits to liking Louis, but he refuses to like birds.
