Nero’s fasces (axes) both maintain his immortality and represent his weaknesses. These weapons are big and imposing, locked behind a guardian that demands an exchange of immortality. And yet, they are taken without much effort and used against him. Without his fasces, Nero falls apart. He has nothing left to hold him together. Nothing left to consolidate his power. And when the fasces are destroyed, Nero, too, crumbles. This shows how all the power in the world cannot save or absolve someone of their weaknesses.
