Those who've lived in abusive situations need time and space to recover. Meg needs to be away from Nero in order to learn who she is, and what kind of person she wants to be. But her strength in standing up to Nero shows exactly how this distance can change a person, allowing her to pass the strengths she has obtained on to her foster-siblings.
