Why do Adam's parents send him to see Dr. Erwood in the novel, The Topeka School?

Adam’s parents send him to be examined by Dr. Erwood, a doctor and neuroscientist living in Topeka, Kansas, hoping that Erwood might find the cause of Adam’s episodes of glossolalia.
