Fred Phelps was the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, which is based in Topeka, Kansas. Phelps and his followers held beliefs that were based in extreme hatred and intolerance, especially towards homosexuality, feminism, and many progressive ideas in general. Phelps’ followers picket against Jane due to her work advancing feminist ideas. Phelps died in 2014, but his organization and followers are still extant.
