Why does Fiona marry Paddy in the novel, The Thorn Birds?

Fiona becomes pregnant out of wedlock after a brief affair with a married man. After her pregnancy is discovered, her father arranges a marriage for her, before she can bring scandal on the entire family. He pays an older dairy hand, Paddy Cleary, to marry the her.
