Explain the simile in this quote:“My conscience told me to run, but some irrational and powerful force was resisting, like a weight pushing me toward the war.”

In context, Tim doesn't believe in the war and has a difficult time accepting he's been drafted. His conscience tells him to run.... to dodge the draft and head for Canada. Another part of him, a part he cannot understand, pushes him to answer his call and go.
