Why does Kaoru pray to Buddha in Chapter 46? Explain.

Kaoru hears of the death of the Eighth Prince and send condolences to his daughters. He travels to Uji to console them in their mourning. He visits the chapel where the Eighth Prince used to pray. While at the chapel in Uji, Kaoru prays to Buddha in the hopes that the Eighth Prince will someday reach nirvana.
