He is afraid because there is nothing he and his men can do about the storm. Genji begins to think about the sins he has committed and believes that those sins may be responsible for causing the storm. He cannot find what sins would be terrible enough to put himself in a life threatening situation. Eventually, lightening hits Genji's home and destroys his gallery. At this point, Genji believes that he must atone for what he has done in his life.
