After the fiesta and back in Spain, Jake is about to return to Paris when he receives a telegram from Brett saying that she's left with Romero for Madrid. Jake flies to her and finds her living in a cheap hotel completely broke. Romero is out of the picture, but she's decided to go back to Mike. Jake and Brett end the novel by talking on the way to the airport about what 'might have been'.
