How does the author use foreshadowing in The Subject Was Roses?

In the first scene, John says, "You sound ready to repeat the old mistakes." He and Nettie then repeat "mistakes" three more times in the next several lines. Through this use of repetition, Gilroy is foreshadowing the way in which John and Nettie will go on repeating the same mistakes, in both language and action.
