What is the author's style in The Stones of Florence by Mary McCarthy?

The book is written in the third person and is objective in nature. The author's love for and interest in the subject, however, still shines through. McCarthy is an academic, and her writing is objective. She presents the history of Florence, as well as its artwork with very little emotion. This is viewed by some as a strange approach to art and the discussion of artwork, but McCarthy's approach is highly appropriate for the presentation of historical facts and the discussion of historical events.
